Oktoberfest: What's the Difference Between Märzen and Festbier?

Guten Tag!  Today's Brewer's Corner is distinctly German focused as this is the most wonderful time of the year in the lager world: Oktoberfest!

We've got our own Oktoberfest Kickoff Party tomorrow, September 16th, at our St. Charles brewery and this year we brewed a special beer for it: our Fox Fest Festbier

What's a festbier you ask?  How is that different from the normal Oktoberfest beer I've been drinking since I cracked open an amber colored, caramelly Sam Adams Octoberfest for the first time?  What’s the difference between Märzen and Festbier? Well, I'll tell you.

I'm not going to go into detail about THE Oktoberfest itself here, though it's a really interesting history that started with a wedding.  If you want, read up on it here:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oktoberfest

In my early craft beer years, I was an Oktoberfest beer fanatic.  Trips to the Bavarian Lodge in Lisle during this time of year carried the same excitement as a kid on Christmas morning.  I loved all the copper colored, malty lagers I could get my hands on.

The thing I found interesting though when I looked at pictures of Oktoberfest in Munich was that the beer people were drinking didn't look like any Oktoberfest Märzen I was familiar with, it looked more like a golden pale lager.

Finally, I got to go to Munich in 2010 and experience the Munich Oktoberfest first hand.  The moment I had my first liter of Spaten Oktoberfestbier placed in front of me and took a big sip, I was hooked on Festbier.  Several more liters (too many, I became what they refer to as a "beer corpse") followed as this new-to-me style was immensely drinkable, but still packed a bit of ABV punch.

Sometime after pale lager became the most popular beer style in the world, the beer served at Munich's Oktoberfest transitioned from the more traditional copper/amber Märzen style into the paler Festbier in the interest of drinkabilty, and thus I'm sure, increased beer sales.  Most of you are probably familiar with a Märzen style Oktoberfest beer.  Think notes of slightly toasted bread crust, fresh baked biscuits, and maybe a little caramel while hopefully not ever really tasting sweet.

The lesser known style outside of the Oktoberfest itself is the Festbier.  This beer is almost like a Munich Helles after it's been hitting the weights.  Everything is amped up, but not into Maibock territory.  Festbier is stronger, maltier, and hoppier than Helles, but never loses that balance and always retains its drinkability.

So, in celebration of this Tale of Two Oktoberfests, we bring you two seasonal lagers to be celebrated this weekend.  Though both have been on our tap list for a bit, our party is their time to shine.  Scarecrows in Lederhosen, our fall staple since our first year, returns, but no longer tiptoeing the line between the styles.  We committed to the Märzen style Oktoberfest this year with Scarecrows, featuring a heavier emphasis on its malt character.

We also, for the first time, are serving up Fox Fest German-Style Festbier, our attempt to bring the beer consumed on the Theresienwiese in Munich home to you!

Enjoy a liter of each this Saturday with me during our Oktoberfest in St. Charles. I'll be walking around in my Lederhosen, hopefully looking in better shape than this picture of me on Oktoberfest day one in Munich over a decade ago.

New Restriction Updates and Outdoor Sun Bubble Reservations

Hi Friends,

Due to the recent announcement of restrictions in our region, we’re eliminating indoor seating and, instead, offering a reservation system for outdoor covered seating starting Friday, October 23rd. To keep everyone as safe and cozy as possible, we’ve installed some new groovy Sun Bubbles. Here’s a rundown of how it’ll work...

Guests can reserve a Bubble for 90 minutes at a time by using our online store. We ask that you refrain from stacking reservations or booking more than one block per day on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays to allow more people the opportunity to enjoy our beer garden. We will require a $15 deposit to confirm a reservation for each block which will be applied to your bill when your reservation concludes.

Reservation time slots will be offered at Noon, 2pm, 4pm, 6pm, and 8pm slots. Each for 90 minutes which gives us 30 minutes to clean up all the Sun Bubbles before the next time slot. Please do not arrive at the Beer Garden more than 10 minutes before your scheduled reservation and don’t linger too long after your reservation ends since our staff only has 30 minutes to clean all the Sun Bubbles before the next group arrives.

While our nifty Sun Bubbles do soak up the sun’s heat and block the wind very well, they aren’t heated or made of concrete.  We recommend dressing in layers and avoid leaning or even touching the bubbles whilst inside.

Other Q&As…

Can I bring food?  Yes!

Can I bring my kids?  Yes! Please make sure they stay inside the bubble during the reservation.

Can I go inside to use the bathrooms? Yes! Please just remember to mask up.

Can I reserve two tables? Yes but the State says if you do you can’t mix, so one group in one bubble the other group in the other bubble the whole time.  We can put you next to each other, and you can make faces at each other though.

Sincerely,

Riverlands Brew Crew

The Taproom is (Partially) RE-OPENING

Tamaki+in+glass.jpg

Hey, everyone. In case we haven’t mentioned it lately, we are extremely grateful for the support and love you’ve shown us over the past few months. We literally wouldn’t be here without all of the online orders that helped us stay afloat. Thank you.

Now for the good news: starting Friday, June 26, our taproom will be partially reopened! We will now be able to offer indoor and outdoor seating (weather pending) AND continue online sales for curbside pick-up (bit.ly/riverlands).

We’re excited to have people back inside with us, but there are some important health and safety precautions we need your help with. Check out what we’re doing to make this weekend safe and fun for as many people as safely possible.

  • We are now back to welcoming all ages in the taproom. We politely ask that if you bring children or anyone under 21 that they remain seated with your party at all times.

  • Hours for the taproom AND beer garden are 12pm to 10pm, Sunday - Thursday and 12pm to 11pm Friday and Saturday.

  • Entry may sometimes be through the beer garden only - please look for signage on the front door. When arriving to sit in the beer garden, please wait to be seated by a beertender to make sure you’re given a sanitized table. Our beer garden will be open weather pending.

  • Tables are first come, first served, no reservations. Parties are limited to eight (8) or fewer, depending on table size. Indoor seating will be limited and tables/chairs cannot be moved or combined for larger parties.

  • Masks MUST be worn any time you are not seated. That includes going to the restroom and standing in line to order. This isn’t a debate, if you forget then we will ask nicely to put it back on when walking around to order or go to the bathroom. We reserve the right refuse service if someone refuses to wear a mask and will be asked to leave.

  • Both Indoor and outdoor seating will have self-service at the left side of the bar, socially spaced appropriately. Please follow the signs and floor markings for the beer line and wear your mask.

  • If you’re seated inside the taproom, please remain at your table except to order, use the restroom, or leave. Please to not float from table to table or change tables without discussing with a server. There will be NO standing room inside or seats at the bar itself.

  • We have started accepting cash again but very much prefer you use electronic payments to keep things cleaner (credit/debit/etc.)

  • Outdoor food will be permitted at times when a food truck is not on premise. See our event page for details. Please dispose of your garbage when finished.

  • Remember: if you feel sick at all or have been exposed to COVID, please stay home.

Thank you in advance for your patience while we get used to these changes and for following these simple rules to help things go smoothly. We really only get one shot at doing this right.
